Sunburn is red and painful skin resulting from too much exposure to sunlight. It usually appears within a few hours after too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Symptoms:

  • Rashes
  • Skin redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Peeling
  • Roughness and warmness

Home Remedies:

  • Apply aloe vera gel directly from plant
  • Cool bath to cool sunburned skin
  • Use of ice packs on red and painful skin
  • Use of Multani soil on sunburned area
  • Apply coconut oil as skin moisturizer
  • Apply milk or yoghurt to cool the sunburned area
  • Use of baking soda in water for bath
  • Apply paste of cucumber

Treatment:

  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen to relieve pain  but these should be taken under doctors prescription.
  • aloe-vera based lotions
  • anesthetics such as Dermoplast, Solarcaine

Ayurvedic treatment:

  • Cucumber and lemon juice which reduce the pain and redness of skin burn
  • Watermelon helps in tone down blisters or redness caused by sunburns.
  • The use of mixture of sandalwood (Chandan) and turmeric (Haldi) with rose water as a cooling paste.

Prevention:

  • Apply sunscreen even in the shade
  • Use of sun protective clothing
  • Drink extra water to avoid dehydration
  • Limit the amount of time you are in the sun between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM
  • Wear sunglasses with lenses that have 99% to 100% UV absorption provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin.
  • Be extra careful around water and sand
