Covid-19: Highly contagious Disease and other viruses
Like a wildfire, Covid-19 has spread throughout the world and is wider than SARS in 2003. In less than three months, the novel coronavirus has infected millions. Scientists all over the world are searching for the way how to beat coronavirus. This virus is far more contagious than Swine Flu.
If you carefully look into history, you will realize every virus is different. And the effects depend on the way the situation evolves.
All viruses on this planet behave differently and also deposit different incubation periods. In other words, how long the virus will take to show its symptoms on the infected person is differs from virus to virus.
Incubation depends on its nature and characteristics. In addition, the period that the person will remain contagious also differs.
Let’s take a look at some past pandemics:
The most severe and deadliest pandemic of the 20th century, the 1918 influenza had destroyed many lives just like sand toys.
The H1N1 virus was known to cause this disease. However, there is no universal consensus about the origin of this dangerous virus, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919.
A death toll from this virus was reported around 20-50 Million.
Ebola virus disease
It has first occurred in villages of Central Africa.
The most complex Ebola outbreak was the 2014–2016 outbreak in West Africa since the virus was first discovered in 1976.
During this Ebola outbreak, the cases and deaths reported were more than all others combined.
The death toll was 2,249 reported.
Swine Flu (H1N1) was a novel influenza A that emerged in 2009. The infection from the virus was noticed in April. When the outbreak was on its peak, the time vaccine started to become available in November. As per the CDC estimation, 151,700-575,400 people died worldwide from the infection during the first year. Globally, 80% of H1N1 virus-related deaths have occurred in people younger than 65 years of age.
Death toll: 151,700-575,400
MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome)
After being identified in 2012, MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) outbreak was reported multiple times.
However, the case fatality rate of MERS was 34.4%, it was less contagious.
MERS has a far greater CFR than Covid-19’s, but each person infected with MERS infects only one additional person. Hence, that makes it much less contagious.
How dangerous is the Hantavirus in comparison with the COVID-19?
Newly emerged in China after the outbreak of Coronavirus, Hantavirus gave a new challenge to the scientists.
It has a fatality rate of 38 percent. Furthermore, the hantavirus’s incubation period is between 1 and 8 days. The Hantavirus mortality rate is much more than the coronavirus. However, it is less likely to transmit among the human-like the way COVID-19 has. Therefore, if you touch the urine, droplets, or saliva of an infected rodent and then touch your mouth, nose, or eyes then only you can get infected with Hantavirus. And also, the relieving things about Hantavirus infection is that it doesn’t transmit from human to human. In other words, if you are not living in an area where rodents are commonly found or if you have not been exposed to a rodent, the chances of getting infected from this virus are very less.
In conclusion, as the hantavirus is not transmitting from person to person, it is less dangerous than the novel coronavirus.
