COVID-19, also known as novel coronavirus disease or 2019 nCoV, is the viral infection that has caused global concern.
Begin with an outbreak, it has negatively impacted world trade and economies, limited global travel and tourism, forced the lockdown of cities, and is now the newest pandemic after the 2009 H1N1 that arose in the USA.
How Did COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Come About?
Authoritatively named as COVID-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO) on February 11, 2020, this respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It was first discovered in Central China’s city of Wuhan on December 8, 2019. After that, COVID-19 has been spreaded to more than a hundred countries with over a hundred thousand confirmed cases.
The global mortality rate of COVID-19 is 3.5% (as of writing).
How did the outbreak start? (In Details)
The very first source of the coronavirus is considered to be a Seafood in Wuhan city of China. The market sold both dead and live animals including fish and birds, among which some were illegal to sell. These kinds of markets pose a intensified risk of viruses attacking from animals to humans. It is because hygiene standards are difficult to maintain if live animals are being kept and butchered on site. Typically, they are also densely packed.
The animal source of the Corona Virus outbreak has not yet been identified. However, the original host is assumed to be bats.
Furthermore, Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market still they might have infected live chickens or other animals sold there.
Surprisingly, bats are host to a wide range of zoonotic viruses including Ebola, HIV and rabies.
An outbreak of COVID-19
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the global death toll is in the thousands. Also, it continues to rise.
The question is, what is the mortality rate?
For the current moment, it is not 100% accurate. However, the estimates range from below 1% to up to 4%, which is considerably lower than the figures for two previous epidemics caused by coronaviruses. Those diseases were Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
For this deadly disease, elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions are more at risk. In February, a Chinese study of 44,672 confirmed cases in Mainland China reported an overall death rate of 2.3%. However, the figure was 14.8% for for people older than 80, and only 0.2% for ages 10 through 39.
